A blue B-class variable in Puppis, 909 light-years away. The light we see tonight set out around 1117, when Peter Abelard was lecturing in Paris and the first stones of the future Notre-Dame cathedral were still waiting in the quarry. Its brightness oscillates slowly—it breathes, as many massive B-stars do in their slow internal adjustment.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 34817 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
