Highly luminous starIts story
3 Puppis is a stellar oddity —an A[e] supergiant cocooned in a disc of gas and dust, something virtually impossible for so luminous a star, whose stellar wind should sweep away any nearby matter. The clue lies in a hidden companion, betrayed by the central cavity carved into the disc. Together they form a spectroscopic binary with a roughly 137-day orbit, imaged in the infrared with the European VLTI.
