An orange ember in the hull of Puppis, stern of the old ship Argo. Its light has crossed the void for 1,132 years —it set out just as the Normans were laying the first stones of Westminster Abbey. It belongs to the rare order of luminous K giants, slow beacons that burn with the calm of a star that has exhausted its hydrogen and now feeds on denser fusions.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 37819 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
