What is HIP 36817
In the Stern of the ancient ship Argo, some 103 light-years away, shines this yellow-white type F star. Its light set out around 1922, when Carter opened Tutankhamun's tomb and the century discovered the past could still speak to the present. Slightly hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it shares that pale golden hue old cartographers called «ivory light».
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 36817 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
