What is HIP 31765
In Puppis, fragment of the ancient ship Argo, shines this yellow G-type star, the same spectral family as the Sun, yet immeasurably more distant. Its light set out 477 years ago, around 1543, when Copernicus published his heliocentric revolution «De revolutionibus orbium coelestium». Though it shares the solar hue, its intrinsic brightness places it in another league: an evolved giant still lighting the southern meridians with mineral patience.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 31765 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
