What is 59 Geminorum
59 Geminorum is a yellow-white F-type sun 187 light-years away, inside Gemini, the constellation of the Twins. Castor and Pollux, the mythic brothers, dominate the horizon; between and around them shine stars like this one, more discreet, filling out the bodies of the twins. Its light set out in the early nineteenth century, while Beethoven was still composing. It arrives now as a luminous echo of that age.
Where it is and when to see it
59 Geminorum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
