Cool red starIts story
53 Geminorum is a cool M-type red giant some 769 light-years away, nested in the Twins. At magnitude 5.75 it stays almost always out of unaided sight, hidden behind the glare of Castor and Pollux. Each northern winter Gemini opens one of the most famed gates of the zodiac, and amid the shine of its two bright heads this reddish light travels from an era earlier than the Renaissance.
