Within the ship of Puppis, 777 light-years away, glows a young blue B-type star nearly lost in the dense strip of the southern Milky Way. Its light set out when, around 1249, Alfonso X of Castile was preparing his Alfonsine Tables and gathering scholars to rewrite the map of the heavens. Far hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its surface gleams with an almost violet blue.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 34339 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
