Among the Twins shines an orange K-class giant whose tepid light travelled nearly six hundred years before reaching us. When that glow left its atmosphere, Constantinople had just fallen and the Italian Renaissance was drawing breath as Portuguese ships felt their way along the African coast. It belongs to those aged giants, far broader than the Sun, that no longer fuse hydrogen in their core and have become patient beacons of the winter sky.
