What is 36 Geminorum

36 Geminorum is a white A-type star 491 light-years away, in the constellation of the twins Castor and Pollux. Its light has been crossing the void for nearly five centuries to reach us: it set out when Charles V was crowned Holy Roman Emperor. It belongs to Gemini's quieter field, that winter tableau traversed each year by the brilliance of the two elder sisters that give the constellation its name.

36 Geminorum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 60° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 71° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 34° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 68° S.
