What is 51 Aurigae
51 Aurigae is an orange K-type giant in the Charioteer, that pentagonal figure crowned by bright Capella. Its warm hue places it at an evolved stage, with a surface cooler than the Sun's yet a far greater volume. Its light takes around five centuries to reach us.
Where it is and when to see it
51 Aurigae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
