What is HIP 2942
In Andromeda, near the threshold of its famous galaxy, a yellow G-type star pulses about 847 light-years away. Its light departed around 1179, while Hildegard of Bingen was writing her musical visions in a Rhineland monastery. A cousin of the Sun in colour, yet farther and more luminous —an elder sister wrapped in the autumn sky—.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 2942 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
