What is 55 Andromedae

55 Andromedae rises some 631 light-years away, an orange giant whose surface has bloated out to forty times the radius of the Sun. Set in the Sun's place, its atmosphere would reach almost to Mercury's orbit. It pours out hundreds of times the solar luminosity and is drifting slowly toward us, about seven kilometres per second, within the figure of Princess Andromeda.

Where it is and when to see it

55 Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 79° up.
From New York it culminates about 90° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 15° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 49° S.

It ranks no. 47 in brightness among the 81 stars of Andromeda in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alpheratz, the brightest: it lies about 24° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
