What is HIP 10366

Andromeda holds more than its famous galaxy: it also houses this yellow G-type star, a distant kin of the Sun, lying 212 light-years away. Its light left the surface around 1814, the year Stephenson was rolling his first steam locomotive over English rails. That sunlike glow has traveled the entire industrial age to appear tonight at a barely visible magnitude of 5.31.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 10366 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 90° up.
From New York it never sets and culminates about 80° up.
From Sydney it culminates about 5° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 39° S.

It ranks no. 44 in brightness among the 81 stars of Andromeda in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alpheratz, the brightest: it lies about 32° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 210 years ago.
