64 Orionis is a hot blue star on the outskirts of the Hunter, beyond the famous belt yet within its same stellar breath. It belongs to that massive, young, brilliant family that makes Orion the most photogenic constellation of the winter sky. Its light crosses some seven hundred and twenty years to reach us: when it left, the Italian Renaissance was barely peeking through the painting of Florence.
Where it is and when to see it
64 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
