Within the immense hall of Orion glows an orange giant some 343 light-years away. Its light set out around 1683, the year of the Ottoman siege of Vienna, when the fate of Europe hung in the balance. Cooler and far larger than the Sun, its amber hue accompanies the celebrated hunter on his eternal winter march across the sky.
