What is HIP 24197

Within the immense hall of Orion glows an orange giant some 343 light-years away. Its light set out around 1683, the year of the Ottoman siege of Vienna, when the fate of Europe hung in the balance. Cooler and far larger than the Sun, its amber hue accompanies the celebrated hunter on his eternal winter march across the sky.

HIP 24197 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
