118 Tauri splits in two within the Bull at 425 light-years away: what the eye reads as a single dot, a modest telescope resolves into a pair of close blue stars. Both are hot B-class suns, far younger and far more massive than ours, in the early phase of a brilliant and brief stellar life. They sit slightly apart from the famous Hyades cluster, in a stretch of sky thick with bright stellar fires.
Where it is and when to see it
118 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
