In the silhouette of the Charioteer burns a blue type-O star, a rare beast among stars: blazingly hot, dozens of times more massive than the Sun, and with a brightness that wavers slightly. Its light has been travelling for 1,875 years: it set out when the Roman emperors of the second century reigned over an empire at its zenith, even before the founding of Constantinople. It is a blue lighthouse of classical Antiquity.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 24575 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
