In the discreet Reticulum of the southern sky burns an orange giant of class K, whose light set out some 263 years ago, when Diderot and d'Alembert were completing the French Encyclopaedia. K stars swollen like this one have already left the stillness of their youth and are beginning to drift slowly towards an end as a planetary nebula.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 19805 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it never rises above the horizon.
From Sydney it never sets and culminates about 62° up.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 28° N.
