What is HIP 19805

In the discreet Reticulum of the southern sky burns an orange giant of class K, whose light set out some 263 years ago, when Diderot and d'Alembert were completing the French Encyclopaedia. K stars swollen like this one have already left the stillness of their youth and are beginning to drift slowly towards an end as a planetary nebula.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 19805 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
