Epsilon Reticulum
What is Epsilon Reticulum
Epsilon Reticuli is a double system just 60 light-years away, in the small southern constellation of the Reticle. The primary is an orange K-type giant orbited by a giant planet, confirmed in 2000 by the Anglo-Australian team: a world of 1.56 Jupiter masses completing one orbit every 428 days at 1.27 astronomical units. Its fainter companion is a white dwarf, the quiet ember of another star.
Where it is and when to see it
Epsilon Reticulum lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
