Delta Reticuli is a cool red giant 526 light-years away, one of the stars marking out the rhombus of the Reticle — a constellation invented to represent the astronomer's gridded eyepiece. Its surface barely reaches 4,000 degrees, and it burns with that subdued red typical of stars that have travelled nearly their full life-cycle and swollen well beyond the size that first witnessed their birth.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Reticulum lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
