In Eridanus, the long celestial river, glows a white A-type star about 351 light-years away. Its light began its voyage around 1675, while the Royal Observatory at Greenwich was being founded and astronomy was learning to measure the sky more sharply. Hotter than the Sun, its white light threads the night like a strand of silver.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 18723 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
