Tau-9 Eridani belongs to the long current of the river Eridanus, that meandering constellation that flows down from Orion to the outer reaches of the southern sky. It is a variable white A-type star more than three hundred light-years away, whose brightness shifts subtly around a mean value. It is part of the fleet of small lights that give body to the mythological riverbed, far from the headwaters where mighty Achernar burns.
Where it is and when to see it
Tau 9 Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
