Psi Pegasi is a red giant of type M burning some 476 light-years away, on the edge of Pegasus' neck. Its deep, almost ruby colour comes from a relatively cool surface —barely three and a half thousand degrees— and from a vast radius: were it to take the Sun's place, it would swallow whole planetary orbits. It is among the warmest and most ancient embers of the winged horse's great square.
Where it is and when to see it
Psi Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
