What is 70 Pegasi

70 Pegasi is a G8 giant that has stabilised on helium fusion in its core and expanded to nine times the Sun's size, carrying two and a half solar masses. It is also a spectroscopic binary: a fainter companion, probably a low-mass main-sequence star, traces a steeply eccentric orbit every 2.58 years. The pair drifts toward the Sun at 17 km per second from 175 light-years away.

70 Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 51° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 62° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 43° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 77° S.

It ranks no. 19 in brightness among the 98 stars of Pegasus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Enif, the brightest: it lies about 26° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
