Salm, tau Pegasi, is a white variable 162 light-years away, pulsing on hourly scales. Her name comes from Arabic and has been associated with the idea of leather or hide: an echo of the Arab inventories of the sky, in which every glimmer received a concrete name even when the star itself was modest. Her light departed when Beethoven was premiering his third symphony.
Where it is and when to see it
Salm lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
