What is 56 Pegasi
56 Pegasi is an orange K-type giant whose light has travelled nearly six centuries before reaching our telescopes. It rides along the flank of the great winged horse, away from the famous Square of Pegasus but part of the same autumn landscape. When that light set out, European astronomers had not yet accepted that the Earth orbits the Sun.
Where it is and when to see it
56 Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
