What is Eta Tucanae

η Tucanae, in the southern Toucan 155 light-years away, is no isolated star: it belongs to the Tucana-Horologium association, a group of young suns —barely 30 million years old— that share a common origin and motion through the galaxy. A white A1 main-sequence star, probably binary, it still carries the chemical fingerprint of the molecular cloud where it was born.

Eta Tucanae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
