What is Delta Tucanae

Delta Tucanae flares 251 light-years away in Tucana, a southern constellation drawn up by Bayer from the catalogues of Keyser and de Houtman. A hot blue-white B-type star, it is a celestial neighbour of the Small Magellanic Cloud and of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Its light accompanies one of the most beautiful tableaux of the southern firmament —where satellite galaxy and cluster meet within a single glance.

Delta Tucanae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
