Nu Tucanae is a variable red giant, cool and vast, about 290 light-years away in the southern Toucan. M-type stars like it breathe slowly: their radius swells and contracts over long periods, modulating brightness in whispers. In a sky populated by the Small Magellanic Cloud, its deep redness adds a warm tone to the scene.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Tucanae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
