What is Beta 3 Tucanae
Beta-3 Tucanae is part of a hierarchical sextuple stellar system in the constellation of the Toucan, every member belonging to the Tucana-Horologium association, one of the youngest stellar groupings near the Sun at just 45 million years. Infrared observations reveal a cold debris disc around it, leftovers from planet-forming processes. At 149 light-years, it pulses white and youthful among the feathers of the southern bird.
Where it is and when to see it
Beta 3 Tucanae lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
