Chi Pegasi is an old red giant on the asymptotic branch, near the edge of Pisces. Its reddish tone barely crosses the threshold of unaided vision, yet behind it lies a star eight billion years older than the Sun, swollen to fifty-three times its radius and radiating four hundred and thirty-five times its light from 368 light-years away. It approaches us at 46 km/s in silence, marking the closing chapter of a long stellar life.
Where it is and when to see it
Chi Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
