What is Omicron Pegasi
Omicron Pegasi peers out between the legs of the winged horse, near the celebrated Great Square of Pegasus that dominates the autumn skies. It is a white A-type star 299 light-years away, young and clear, whose brilliance helps trace the silhouette of the mythic steed that bore Bellerophon on its back. Its light takes almost three centuries to reach Earth: what we see tonight set out when Bach was composing his first cantatas in Leipzig.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
