Lambda Andromedae is a variable yellow giant at 86 light-years, set on the outline of the chained princess. It belongs to the RS Canum Venaticorum family: a starspot-covered surface that makes its light fluctuate in a slow rotational cycle, like an aged, restless Sun. Close enough to us that even its faint flicker reaches our instruments laden with stellar detail, a small breathing surface measured patiently across decades of observation.
Where it is and when to see it
Lambda Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
