Zeta Andromedae is an orange giant famed for the immense dark spots scattered across its surface —mapped by interferometry with a precision granted to only a handful of stars beyond the Sun. Tidally distorted by an unseen companion, it shows subtle ripples in brightness. Its light reached us after nearly two centuries crossing the autumn sky.
Where it is and when to see it
Zeta Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
