What is 97 Aquarii
97 Aquarii is a double main-sequence system of type A3, perched directly on the ecliptic —the path the Sun appears to trace across the sky through the year—. Its two components, of magnitudes 5.6 and 6.7, combine into a glow of 5.2 from 213 light-years away. Because of this zodiacal position, the Moon occasionally drifts in front of it, giving astronomers brief clues about its angular size.
Where it is and when to see it
97 Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
