In the small Tucana shines a yellow-white F-type star, only sixty-seven light years away, almost a cosmic neighbor. The light reaching us now set out in the late nineteen-sixties, when humanity first set foot on the Moon and the southern skies were being observed in growing detail from Chile and South Africa. Slightly hotter and brighter than the Sun, it is a close sister whose crisp glow recalls those years when space ceased to be a dream.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 114948 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
