In the modest Tucana, the southern bird, burns a hot blue star some 572 light-years away. Its light set out around 1454, when Gutenberg was tuning his press in Mainz and beginning to multiply words in lead. Far hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its electric brilliance contrasts with the diffuse nebulosities that tangle this southern corner of the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 377 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
