57 Pegasi is an M-type red giant, an old and swollen star whose brightness drifts at the slow tempo of cool stellar atmospheres. It rides along the flank of Pegasus at some seven hundred and eighty-two light-years, in a stretch of the autumn sky where the unaided eye can only just catch it. Its reddish light has travelled for centuries, crossing nearly unfathomable voids, before halting tonight on a dilated pupil.
Where it is and when to see it
57 Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
