What is Phi Pegasi

φ Pegasi is a cool red M-type giant within the Winged Horse, one of the vastest constellations of the northern firmament. Variable and some 463 light-years away, her distended atmosphere pulses slowly, shedding faint shells of gas into space. Her reddish tint sets her apart from the bluish-white field that dominates Pegasus.

Where it is and when to see it

Phi Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 58° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 68° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 37° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 71° S.
