φ Pegasi is a cool red M-type giant within the Winged Horse, one of the vastest constellations of the northern firmament. Variable and some 463 light-years away, her distended atmosphere pulses slowly, shedding faint shells of gas into space. Her reddish tint sets her apart from the bluish-white field that dominates Pegasus.
Where it is and when to see it
Phi Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
