Scheat marks one of the corners of the Great Square of Pegasus and takes its name from the Arabic word for «leg» or «shin». It is a red variable giant: an ancient star pulsing slowly, shifting in brightness over months like a tired heart. At 196 light-years, its reddish light set out when Napoleon was still only a shadow in European history books.
Where it is and when to see it
Scheat lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
