Algenib is a faintly variable blue star marking one corner of the Great Square of Pegasus, that vast autumn rectangle visible across most of the northern hemisphere. Hot and pulsating, it beats with a rhythm barely perceptible to the eye. Its light takes some 392 years to cross the void to us: what tonight traces the geometry of the winged horse set out when European mathematicians were uncovering the first laws of planetary motion.
Where it is and when to see it
Algenib lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
