What is Algenib

Algenib is a faintly variable blue star marking one corner of the Great Square of Pegasus, that vast autumn rectangle visible across most of the northern hemisphere. Hot and pulsating, it beats with a rhythm barely perceptible to the eye. Its light takes some 392 years to cross the void to us: what tonight traces the geometry of the winged horse set out when European mathematicians were uncovering the first laws of planetary motion.

Where it is and when to see it

Algenib lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 54° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 64° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 41° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 75° S.

It ranks no. 4 in brightness among the 98 stars of Pegasus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Enif, the brightest: it lies about 37° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
