Iota Pegasi lies just 38 light-years away — a cosmic neighbour of the Solar System. It is a spectroscopic binary identified in 1899, two near-twin stars circling each other in an almost perfectly circular orbit every ten days. In about four billion years the larger one will swell and begin pouring its mass onto its companion; the final fate is two white dwarfs spinning together in silence.
