Omicron Andromedae, also catalogued as 1 Andromedae, is a blue giant about 687 light-years away, set in the chained silhouette of the mythological princess. It belongs to the Be class: spinning so violently that a ring of glowing hydrogen escapes from its equator, causing the faintest of slow flickers across centuries. The light reaching us tonight left during the European Middle Ages, long before any telescope could pick out the red signature of hydrogen in its spectrum.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Andromedae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
