Sadalbari is a cool, vast red giant burning with a ruby tone on the back of Pegasus. Its name comes from the Arabic «saʿd al-bāriʿ», «the luck of the excellent one», part of an old set of «fortune» stars that medieval astronomers grouped by symbolic affinity. At barely 106 light-years, it is among the closest red giants the unaided eye can contemplate.
Where it is and when to see it
Sadalbari lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
