What is 44 Aquarii
44 Aquarii is a yellow G-type star 309 light-years away, similar in spectral class to the Sun but far more distant and luminous. It shines in Aquarius, the zodiacal water-bearer associated since antiquity with the rains of northern winter. Its light departed around the years the United States Constitution was being drafted, and only now completes the journey to our telescopes.
Where it is and when to see it
44 Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
