Omicron Aquarii is a variable blue-white B-type star more than 430 light-years away, in the constellation of the Water Bearer. It belongs to the so-called Be stars, suns that spin so fast they periodically eject a gas disk around their equator, causing small fluctuations in their brightness. It is a hot flame that breathes slowly, in a sky corner where Aquarius pours his invisible jar toward the south.
Where it is and when to see it
Omicron Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
