14 Cephei is a rare case: a hot, variable O-type supergiant some 3,000 light-years away in Cepheus. O-type stars are among the rarest and most energetic in the nearby catalogue, with short and violent lives. Its light, leaving home almost thirty centuries ago, now arrives dimmed by distance and by the interstellar dust it crosses on its long journey.
Where it is and when to see it
14 Cepheus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
